SORT OF SUMMER WISHLIST

Wish-lists are always hard for me to compile as I can recall a million wondrous garments swirling around in my head that a) cost an arm and a leg on the black market b) are completely impractical and c) will most probably end up serving their lifetime locked away in my cupboard gathering dust. My new mantra when it comes to shopping is 'classic and comfortable', I want to find utilitarian pieces that I will be able to wear for a few seasons that can be paired back with the rest of my wardrobe.  Smart huh? I have downgraded and shipped out the the things I seriously don't need and have never worn (a kids size pink fluffy bomber comes to mind?) and am welcoming home with open arms the staples; striped cottons, denim, silk shirts, elegant flats and the like. Here is a selection of my seasons cravings...  I am aware that there's a fur coat thrown in there but it is just THAT good, there will certainly be 'chilly' night in summer to rock it. My other justification, keeping in tune with this new mantra is that leopard print is a classic staple and every woman needs one hanging out in her closet.

SNAPSHOT // MELBOURNE

A few weekends ago I made my way down to Melbourne town to visit a dear friend, taking full advantage of the insanely cheap tickets a certain airline (grrr) had on offer (you certainly get what you pay for, but it is nothing that the soul can't endure for less that 2 hours). I had forgotten what Sydney's southern cousin was like, with all her secret alleys and kind folk that all seem to hang out in the never-ending scroll of cafes, restaurants and bars. I think the city has a sense of wonder and magic to it, perhaps it's because there are so many nooks and hideouts uncharted by my fancy footwork, but every time I found some cute little shop or gallery, it felt like I was unlocking a treasure map - Alice Euphemia: heaven on earth? The only thing that got me down was the damned cold that not even 3 pairs of stockings could combat! I will certainly be taking more weekend sojourns in the summer to drink cider in pots and pints and smoke endless cigarettes through misty windows.

Photos: Mixed Business, the most amazing breakfast since sliced bread turned into toast and added sides. Set in a converted antiques warehouse, this dear little cafe has all the farmhouse charm in the world. We sat outside, clutching hot cups of chai until a plate of wonder was revealed to us. What we ate? Oh my god... Rosemary potato roti with poached eggs, oven roasted tomatoes, feta, avocado, tomato relish, greek beans with parmesan accompanied with soy and linseed toast buttered to perfection. I was desperate to try the waffles and maple ice-cream as dessert, but alas, my poor stomach cried out in pain.

A few outfit snaps from the weekend; on the left I am wearing my boyfriends Fillipa K striped tee, A.P.C denim mini that I can't get enough of, A.P.C multi-strap wedges with a vintage Trench. On the right, Isabel Marant print Dress, Acne Leather Jacket and the same trusty cloppers.

The last photos are at Pope Joan, I can't remember where it was! but the breakfast was delish. I had a bowl of rice porridge with candied macadamias and a mixed fruit juice.

STYLE MUSE: MISS JEANNE DAMAS

Jeanne Damas has a most enviable wardrobe. Her blog captures her gallivanting across the globe clad head to toe in simple, sensual, elegance, laced with that certain je-ne-sais-quoi that only les femme's francaise seem capture.  I love how she makes a simple navy sweater and jeans complimented by a slash of rouge or an Isabel Marant bomber, with the 'Betty Sneakers' and a denim high waisted mini look like perfection. Her pillowy lips and endeering nonchalance in front of the camera make her absolutely captivating, and the girl is only 19.

CASSIDY BE MINE

I felt a burning desire to share with the world, my most recent, unjustifiable, lusty, passionate craving for the Acne Cassidy Lipstick Red Coat:

Luxurious cherry red wool, timeless mens tailoring finished with a detachable shearling collar, never in my life have I seen a creation so perfect. I would wear this with every stitch in my wardrobe for seasons and seasons and seasons to come.  Now for the $1050 price tag... Beg, steal or borrow, this has got to be mine!

CARNIVALE

A few days in the country watching the abandoned windmills, haunted houses engulfed by bearded trees, cows wallowing in mountain river etc. fly passed my window in the front seat, coupled with the copious amounts of folk and blues I willingly subjected my ears to, namely this favourite by Neil Young, have seriously got me dream wielding about my life in a travelling circus. Yesiree.

I have always found the lure of the Vaudeville circus hypnotic in my dreams, rekindling the light of the lost dancer in me. I dance, on a broken stage, twirling batons of fire, a crowd of misfits watching in silence, enchanting but somewhat macabre as the circus always is. I imagine the vision unfolding somewhere in the deep south, Bob Dylan has just rode by on a horse, there are giraffes and dwarfs, strong men and knife throwers, caravans with gypsies and fortune tellers.. a bit like this, and I'm wearing a dress adorned in sequins and these Vivienne Westwood shoes (if you are out there somewhere, please make your way to me, thank-you). The bearded trees are there, feris wheels covered in ferns, fairy lights, raucous laughter, debauchery... And then I wake up!

I think this shoot from Lula styled by the fabulous Leith Clarke somewhat captures it.

INTO THE WOODS

Leaving the city lights behind and running away to Barrington Tops on the morrow! Bubble baths, wood cabins, bushwalking, candles, organic food, cold misty mountain air, sleeping in... These are the things dreams are made of:

A SWEDISH LOVE STORY 1969

Roy Andersson is the king of Swedish advertising, yet every decade or so, he adds a feature length film to his inventory. Long shots with slow developing action and sets crowded with people painted with unforgiving deadpan expressions watching scenes of horror unveil before them dominate his films. Dark comedy is his forte, not to mention is apt for exposing what others wouldn't. A Swedish Love Story, Andersson's first 1969 feature debut, explores young love in an adult world. Stylistically this film is a dream, it's daring and rebellious charm make me want to slip back in time and cry over bad boys.
